Patented Forms of the Probiotic Yeast, Saccharomyces boulardii
| Florastor® and FlorastorKids®are live, lyophilized (like freeze-dried) products containing the probiotic yeast, Saccharomyces boulardii. In retail stores, it is sold in capsules or packets. Each capsule or packet contains 250 mg of Saccharomyces boulardii lyo (5 billion organisms) and 33 mg of lactose with other ingredients. |

The dosage is one capsule or packet, 2 times per day spread apart (such as in the morning and in the evening). Always read ingredients before taking.
At the time of this writing, the filler ingredients in the capsules are magnesium stearate, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and titanium dioxide, and it is appropriate for anyone who can swallow capsules safely. The capsule may also be opened and mixed in with a cool food such as applesauce or yogurt, or in a cool, noncarbonated beverage. It can even be opened and emptied onto the tongue if followed by at least 4 oz. of a cool drink. It’s available in 20-capsule blister packs and 50-count bottles.
The packets contain fructose, colloidial anhydrous silica and a tutti frutti flavor as extra ingredients. This supplement is appropriate for children 2 months and older. It is available at the time of this writing in a box of 20 packets each. To administer to a child, mix the contents of the packet with a cool, noncarbonated drink such as water or juice or a cool, soft food such as applesauce or yogurt. For babies, add the packet contents to formula after it is warmed or to expressed breast milk given in a bottle.
Both products are vegetarian and gluten-free at the time of this writing. They do not include any of the following allergens: corn, meat, egg protein, milk protein, fish, nuts, gluten, shellfish, latex, but they may contain traces of soy.
This probiotic supplement was first available in Europe in 1953. The website says that the capsule dissolves in your stomach and starts working within 30 minutes after you take it. It is stable at room temperature for 3 years. It should not be refrigerated, as that could expose it to excess moisture.

If you aren't a fan of the extra ingredients in Biocodex's product, luckily, there IS an S. boulardii supplement which does not have a lot of unnecessary ingredients in it like the Florastor products and that is Designs for Health's Floramyces. It is dairy-free, lactose-free, non-GMO, does not contain gluten and does not have to be refrigerated. You can find that in my dispensary along with other quality supplements. |
