Smidge Sensitive Probiotic is formerly known as GutPro. Organic 3, Inc., the makers of GutPro, changed the name to Smidge to secure a brand and international trademarks. Smidge is a company based in Michigan, USA at the same address used by Organic 3. |
Here is a table from Smidge showing the comparison of the products. From my information on GutPro products, there have been some slight changes in the orders of probiotic bacteria in the new products:
The product is said to contain "eight clinically-proven strains of probiotics for gut health" in the powder and capsule supplements, although the strains are not designated. Seven are human strains, and one is a plant-based strain. One Smidge spoonful contains 3 billion CFU, and the product includes a spoon.
The eight strains are:
The Smidge Sensitive Probiotic capsules have the same bacteria in the same order, whereas in GutPro the gasseri and salivarius were switched in the order of listing between the powder and the capsules. Two capsules contain 10 billion CFU.
The Smidge Infant Powder does not contain L. plantarum. The L. plantarum
is omitted because the international food standards (Codex
Alimentarius) of the World Health Organization
(http://www.fao.org/fao-who-codexalimentarius/standards/en/) states that
only L-lactate should be in infant formulations. L. plantarum
produces both L- and D-lactate. Debate on the restriction of D-lactate
in infants and its potential to cause acidosis continues, especially when L-lactate is produced by other strains in the same formula, such as those in Smidge Sensitive Probiotic.
The order of the bacteria in the infant powder, which is a slightly different order than GutPro Infant, are:
There are 1.45 billion CFU per Smidge spoonful, and the product contains a spoon.
The other ingredients in Smidge Sensitive Probiotics at the time of this writing are:
Please verify ingredients of any supplement prior to taking it.
Smidge introduced a new probiotic capsule. Smidge Optimal Probiotic. This formula has 13 strains, which is more strains than the others, for a more diverse probiotic blend. There are, however, no added prebiotics, so gastrointestinal issues will not be adversely affected by those.
Smidge Optimal Probiotics contains the following species:
Other ingredients at the time of this writing are: Microcrystalline cellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, and water. Always check ingredients prior to consumption!
The dosing for the Optimal Probiotics is to start with one capsule daily with food, and then increase to 2 capsules together, or as directed by a practitioner. Two capsules contain 20 billion CFU.
For the capsules, one adult serving is 2 capsules per day providing 10 billion CFU, although they suggest to start with one capsule.
For the powder, one adult serving is 1 Smidge spoonful providing 3 billion CFU. Each bottle has 1000 adult servings.
For the infant powder, the dosage is 1 Smidge spoonful containing 1.45 billion CFU. Each bottle has 750 servings.
Powders may be sprinkled on cold foods. Avoid taking probiotics with hot foods or drinks.
The pros of Smidge Sensitive Probiotic as I see them are:
There are 306 reviews with a 4.9-star rating on their website for the Sensitive Probiotic Powder and 153 reviews with a 4.8-star rating for the capsules at the time of this writing (September, 2023). Here is a sampling of consumer favorable reviews on their website:
"Worked really well for my allergies, actually better than anything I've ever tried. I'm no longer the most allergic person in the crowd, or even allergic for that matter. Thank you so much Gut-Pro!!!" 7/6/2020
"When kids are young you never know what they’re actually allergic to, I gave these probiotics to my newborn when he got thrush and Bought it again To keep on hand if they ever have to have anabiotic’s. I’ve taken probiotics a lot with my celiac and you never know what you’re going to get. I know these are good because my newborn did amazing on them and he was super sensitive as a baby. that’s why I spend the money on gut pro versus others." 4/23/2020
"Love and appreciate this product. It is effective and powerful so you
need to start slow and move up. My son who has Crohns uses this and it
is a very supportive product. " 3/28/2020
"I started taking GutPro [Smidge™ Sensitive Probiotic] ~4.5 years ago, at
the recommendation of my chiropractor based on the book "The Epidemic
of Absence." After the prior round of allergy shots became ineffective, I
experienced symptoms of intense allergies the following spring. I've
been allergic since I was a child to environmental things (spring
pollen, weeds, animal dander, dust, etc.), Now I no longer have
allergies, and no longer need allergy shots (the previous five (5)
rounds of allergy shots only had temporary results for me). I continue
to take GutPro [Smidge™ Sensitive Probiotic] and find it the best! And
it's so cost effective when compared to allergy shots and the time
getting shots every 4-6 weeks. Initially it took approximately three
months before my allergy symptoms totally disappeared, and it was
totally worth the wait!" 11/21/2019
“I ordered this for husband and self to help with tummy issues. We are seniors and sometimes had bathroom issues. After starting this product, we are both MUCH improved. Will order again and even recommended it to husbands acupuncturist.” 10/26/2019
The Smidge Infant Powder had 57 reviews with a 5-star rating. Here is one review:
"We started this probiotic when my baby was about a month old. She was
having terrible gas pains and spitting up a lot of breastmilk after each
feeding. She would wake up in the middle of the night screaming with
gas pain and had to be rocked back to sleep multiple times a night. We
have been using this probiotic for a little over a month and are SO
happy we found it. Baby still gets a little gas but significantly
improved from what he was having, the spitting up has decreased
immensely too. We still use just a small amount every other day. It is
the only probiotic I could find that wasn't mixed with additives or
preservatives. I was nervous to get a powder but it is such a small
amount needed I just wet my nipple with breastmilk and put the powder
directly on the nipple. It is more pricey than other probiotics but we
use such small amounts this will last well over 6 months -1 year (&
you can't beat the ingredients!) . Cannot say enough good things and we
will continue to use this product for this baby and any future babies!" 2/18/2020
Importantly,
There were no unfavorable reviews!!!
The cons of this probiotic supplement as I see them are:
If you would like help in determining if this probiotic supplement is right for you, please consider nutritional consultations with me. A supplement is just that: supplemental to other healthy lifestyle factors. A supplement should not replace good eating habits and taking care of oneself and nutrition consultations can certainly help with those.
The powder is a high potency supplement. All Smidge products have "generally recognized as safe" species of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, are free of most allergens and are packaged and shipped properly. I appreciate the care in handling and shipping that Smidge utilizes.
If you decide to take Smidge Sensitive Probiotic, or any of the other Smidge probiotics, I would combine the health benefits of them with the benefits provided by:
