According to Jarrow at the time of this writing (March, 2016), the 10 probiotic strains are:

  4. Lactobacillus casei Lc-11
  5. Lactobacillus paracasei Lpc-37

The strains have origins in human, dairy, plant and unknown sources.

What Other Ingredients are Present in
Ultra Jarro-Dophilus?

The other ingredients at the time of this writing are sodium alginate (gel-forming protection derived from algae), calcium phosphate, tapioca starch, maltodextrin, silicon dioxide (anti-clumping agent), magnesium stearate (vegetable source flow agent), vitamin C and an acid-resistant vegetarian capsule of hydroxypropylmethylcellulose.

The manufacturer suggested usage is 1 capsule per day, with water, during or shortly after a meal, or as directed by your qualified health care professional.

  • It is a multi-species product with the strains identified.
  • It is a high-potency probiotic supplement containing more strains and a higher total CFU than most probiotic supplements.
  • This supplement is marketed to “restore, protect and maintain a balanced intestinal flora.” Based on the strains included in the product, this product should be able to live up to those claims if the proper amounts of each strain are included.
  • The vegetarian acid-resistant capsule, and the integration of the probiotic strains with a gel-forming matrix, increase the survival of viable cells through the stomach and the intestinal tract. The matrix provides protection against stomach and bile acids. 
  • This supplement at this time contains NO wheat, gluten, dairy, egg, fish/shellfish, peanuts or tree nuts.
  • A minimum of 50 billion viable cells is guaranteed if this product is kept refrigerated and within before the Best Used Before Date.

What Are The Cons of Ultra Jarro-Dophilus?

  • This supplement is marketed to “restore, protect and maintain a balanced intestinal flora.” Unfortunately, Jarrow doesn’t specify how many CFU of each bacterium are present to know which has the dominant effects.
  • At this time, this product contains traces of soy. Whether that soy is GMO or non-GMO is currently being investigated by Jarrow. If the product is completely non-GMO then according to the company representative I contacted, that information will be on the label in the future.
  • This supplement also contains maltodextrin from non-GMO corn and tapioca starch, both relatively simple carbohydrates.
  • It also contains anti-clumping and flow agents which may be undesirable for some people.
  • Like many probiotic supplements, refrigeration of this product is required to maintain potency. I always recommend refrigerating probiotics unless the manufacturer directly says not to so that the maximum numbers of microbes are preserved.
  • No studies with the supplement as a whole have been performed, although this is not unusual. When whole-supplement studies are available, they better clarify who may benefit from a supplement,

"I bought Ultra Jarrow-Dophilus at Whole Foods with the idea to help my 16 year old daughter better digest the food and get rid of bloating that she was constantly suffering of in the last couple of years. The product was refrigerated when I bought it and I kept it refrigerated, thus I believe that the content was as fresh as it should be. My daughter took one capsule a day, for six days. After first couple of days, she felt some minor stomach upsets, but we thought that this should be a normal reaction at the initial time, so she continued taking the capsules. On day 6, she started feeling very nauseous and developed a severe diarrhea, which lasted for several days. She lost 10 pounds (and she was already skinny), thus this whole experience was very unpleasant and dangerous for her. I believe that the dosage of 40 billion bacterias per capsule was too strong for her. I recommend taking extra care with this product since it can be dangerous." 3-30-11
